Gongs are decorative, rimmed, metal discs that make a deep, resonating sound when struck with something heavy. Gongs can be hung from trees, porches, verandahs or doorways, and in some cases, they can replace doorbells. Gongs make a much fuller sound than the standard doorbell, and they are an excellent addition to any yard or garden. Gongs not only make a wonderful, resonating sound, they can also be stunningly beautiful.
There are three different types of gongs. Gongs you find in homes, gardens, and yards are suspended gongs. They are flat discs suspended vertically by a chord in the middle of the disc. Gongs have a long history that originated in Asia—more specifically, China.
Gongs can come in many different types and styles. Some gongs feature elaborate, ornate decorations, designed to shine in any garden, no matter how beautiful the flowers. Other gongs are much smaller and simpler, and can even be hung indoors. Some gongs are entirely decorative, while other gongs are designed to make full, rich sounds. Unlike bells and windchimes, gongs need to be struck to make any noise. In this way, they can be a perfect addition for anybody who wants to add a beautiful decoration, but may not necessarily like the noise associated with windchimes.
